Lions Lose Nail-Biter vs Hocking
DETROIT -- A hot start and a frantic finish led to a 106-104 loss in Overtime for the Community Christian College Men's Basketball team. Hocking, which led by as many as 10 in the second half, won the game forcing fouls in the paint, and made their shots at the free throw line.
Community Christian dropped to 13-9 overall.
A lead seesawed for most of the game, but a 3 from Terrence Partridge gave DC3 the lead at 91-90 with about a minute to go. Hocking made two pairs of free throws on the other side to lead 94-91.
From there, with 10 seconds on the clock, Trey West would take the inbound, dribble up the left side of the court past the press defense, step back behind the three-point line, and nail the shot to tie the game with the clock expired. Fans surrounded him on the court as he made it known that this game was headed for another 5 minutes.
In overtime, Hocking would drill a couple 3-pointers, taking a 2-point lead thanks to Trey West making the opening bucket for DC3. Terrence Partridge made a layup on the other side, and Hocking would draw a foul to go up 2 again after the free throws. Both teams would turn the ball over, and the next team to take advantage would be the Hawks again, making a slick pass inside for a layup to take a 4-point lead with 34 seconds to go. DC3 would only find 1-point on the other end, and would be forced to foul Hocking. They made another 2 free throws, and the Lions would trail by 5 with not much time left.
Desperate for a bucket, Partridge would drive to the 3-point line and throw up a shot, extending the leg to make sure he was fouled on the play. He made all three free throws to bring the game to one last possession. Hocking would shoot more free throws, and miss both. With only 2 seconds left and no timeouts, a half court heave would be the last shot DC3 would take before the final buzzer, before eventually falling short to their rival on their own home court.
Partridge led DC3 with 36 points -- one of five in double figures for the Lions. West finished with 17 points and 15 boards to pick up his first double double of the year. DaiQuan Coach had 21 points, Blackmon had 11, and Khamari Harris-Curry had 10.
Hocking won the turnover battle, 30-20.
The Lions return to action next Wednesday as they travel to Nelsonville for a rematch vs Hocking. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
