1st Quarter Offense Key to Victory vs CCC California

DETROIT, MI -- Community Christian College (Detroit) picked up its 2nd win of the season as the Lions upended the Community Christian (California) Saints, 32-6, on a sun-soaked Saturday in Detroit. The first quarter was the best this Detroit team has looked, as they went up 24-0 to start off with a bang in the penultimate home game.

The Lions moved to 2-7 overall, while the Saints moved to 1-3 in their only trip outside of the Southwest region. On the opening drive, Detroit went 56 yards in 11 plays for the game's first score. Marcellus Hunt received a handoff from Michael Martin-El and rushed up the right side untouched for a 22-yard touchdown. Martin-El ran a keeper on the play after to secure an 8-0 lead.

On the next Lions possession, Martin-El only needed one play and 15 seconds to get it to Ka'Von Matthews, who burned his corner deep for a 95 yard touchdown. Down 16-0, the Saints had no answer. Jayden Dennis would sack their QB on a fourth-and-long to give possession back to Detroit at midfield.

Martin-El already put together a lot of great tape in less than 15 minutes of play. Just before the quarter was over though, a blown-up run play forced Martin-El to spin around and keep it himself, in which he would scamper up the left sideline for 33 yards and score a rushing touchdown of his own.

The California offense was pushed back into their own end zone in the middle of the 2nd quarter, which forced a punt that Ralph Gaston received at the 45 and ran back all the way to the 2-yard line, which echoed that 95-yard interception he had over a month ago on this same field. David Williams would get a crack at the QB spot, rushing forward for a touchdown off a fake handoff.

The Saints elected to play a running clock throughout the 2nd half, which sealed the deal for the Lions, notching their 2nd win of the season.

CCC Detroit picked off the opposing quarterback 3 times throughout the afternoon. The defensive line was able to create pressure all afternoon, forcing their QB to make errant throws throughout the afternoon.

Penalties on both sides of the ball forced Detroit to go scoreless throughout the 2nd half, but they forced a season-low 6 points from CCC California, which is also the lowest amount of points this defense has allowed all season.

Your Lions will ride high into the bye weeks, in which their next scheduled game is at CCC's team in Georgia on November 16th. Their next home game will be the last game of the season on November 23rd, in which they will look to get revenge on the College of DuPage.
